Turtle Etiquette

We want to help, not harm. The female turtles that come to the beach to lay their eggs don't like an audience. (Would you if you were delivering?) If spotlights are used and there is a lot of noise, they will turn around and wait for another night.

It is good turtle etiquette to watch by moonlight, and if you're going to use a light, try a small penlight or candle with a soft glow.

Walk slowly and softly to where the turtle is laying her eggs. Wait until she has committed to the spot by digging the hole. Don't talk. Don't shine lights, sit quietly on the ground and wait.

Once she has finished laying her eggs and covering them up, you may take a photo, when she is returning to the ocean.

When removing the eggs for reburying in the sanctuary, wear surgical gloves. If you don't have any, gloves will be provided for you. Work gently with your fingers, slowly and carefully brushing away a little sand at a time. Practice patience please.
